In this Colombian classroom the teacher is letting students explore how quadratic expressions can be represented through different visual representations. Students are using small cards to create the representations, before the teacher chooses one example and leads the class through how the area of the shape can be represented algebraically. The class invites a student to show this is equal to the original quadratic expression. All the while, the teacher watches over the behaviour of the class to ensure focus and that the energy and enthusiasm in the class is directed towards the learning goal.
This is an urban, public school. Watch out for how the teacher: - Quickly manages a disruption to ensure student focus
- Highlights the connections between students’ different visual representations
- Allows different students to share their thinking
How do you support understanding of procedures and processes in your own classroom?
