Learning is not easy. In the classroom students must carry out work, express ideas and push their thinking, often encountering and exposing difficulties or misconceptions. For students to be willing to be vulnerable like this, it is essential that they feel sheltered from embarrassment and well supported. Thus, the extent to which a teacher can create a safe and respectful classroom environment is an important factor in determining the potential of a lesson.
