Here is an example from Colombia of how to kick off a lesson in an engaging way that promotes strong interpersonal skills between students. The teacher organises students into small groups where they must work together to pass a loop of fabric around the group, all in a race against other groups! The teacher reorganises the groups and the students work with different people in bigger groups. This warm and energising atmosphere serves as a platform for the rest of the lesson, with the teacher reiterating how teamwork is important for today’s learning goals.
This is an urban, public school. Watch out for how the teacher: - Immerses students in a cooperative team activity at the beginning
- Monitors groups and offers encouragement
- Highlights the relevancy of teamwork for the lesson
How do you promote respect in your own classroom?
