Following a period of independent work in this Mexican classroom, the teacher invites students to support each other if somebody is struggling. However, she emphasises that if someone is struggling they must still be doing the learning, by taking the lead on explaining to their partner who has solved the problem. The teacher places great emphasis on honesty and transparency in this lesson, asking students to be open and clear when they are struggling so that she can offer support appropriately. She reiterates to the class the values that underpin their classroom environment.
This is a rural, public school. Watch out for how the teacher: - Encourages collaboration and exchange at the end of an activity
- Explicitly restates norms for interacting and learning together
- Promotes an open dialogue about struggles and mistakes
How do you promote respect in your own classroom?
