Here in this Japanese classroom, the lesson kicks off straight away with a review of previous learning. The teacher gives two questions the class have previously answered and which they will build on today. The teacher monitors the classroom while students solve the problems independently, and selects two students to write out a model answer on whiteboards. The teacher displays these answers and talks through some common mistakes that he spotted, whilst reminding students of the correct method for solving these problems.
This is an urban, public school. Watch out for how the teacher: - Gives students two questions from the last lesson to review
- Uses whiteboards to show students' model answers
- Discusses in detail the common mistakes they saw while monitoring
How do you encourage public sharing in your own classroom?
