Learning can be challenging and this Japanese classroom presents an example of how persistence can be encouraged. The teacher asks a student to write out their solution on the board, when they start to struggle the teacher gives them the time and space to keep going and to go and check their written work. There is no rush or time pressure here for this student. The teacher asks the student to also explain their method to the class, before offering the class a second way of approaching the problem as well.

- Provides small hints

- Offers an alternative way of solving the problem as well
