In this Japanese classroom, the teacher offers an example of how to careful nurture students' persistence. The students are working on challenging work, but the teacher will not let them just give up and he will not accept them settling for an incorrect answer. The teacher is warm and encouraging whilst offering small hints that guide student thinking. In particular, he is happy to wait and keep on giving hints, if it means that the student makes progress in the right direction, as can be seen in how he patiently waits and supports students here .
This is an urban, public school. Watch out for how the teacher: - Offers hints that prompt students to check their work
- Challenges students to generalise across their answers
- Gives students time and opportunities to try and solve problems independently
How do you encourage persistence in your own classroom?
