It can be challenging for students to take their understanding and to apply it to new, unseen contexts. In this Colombian classroom, the teacher leads students through an example real world problem. Each step is taken together as a class, with the teacher organising their instruction to be very clear and very logical. The teacher uses questions to draw out student thinking and to direct them when they are stuck, all the while building a well-sequenced written solution on the board for students.
This is an urban, public school. Watch out for how the teacher: - Guides students through each step of how to solve a problem
- Uses hints and questions to scaffold student thinking
- Reminds students of different ways to find the solutions
How do organise procedural instruction in your own classroom?
