In this Mexican classroom the teacher has asked students to work in groups on trying to match different containers to different graphs based on how the containers would fill. A student from each group explains the rationale behind their decisions, with the teacher questioning students to draw out deeper thinking. In particular, the teacher creatively asks some students to compare across similar graphs and justify their reasoning.
This is an urban, public school. Watch out for how the teacher: - Invites different students to speak out their thinking at the front
- Uses questions to push students to give more detailed answers
- Clarifies and repeats key information
How do you facilitate explanations in your own classroom?
