Encouraging students to self-reflect and self-evaluate their learning can be challenging. In this classroom, the teacher has established a routine for self-evaluation at the end of the lesson. Students discuss in pairs their success and challenges first though. Similarly, before students complete their self-evaluation, the teacher takes students back to the beginning of the lesson where he had set a challenging abstract problem. He asks students to vote as a class a second time on their position on the question, to evaluate their thinking from the lesson.

This is an urban, public school. Watch out for how the teacher:
- Encourages students to share their successes and difficulties with their peers

- Has students revisit their investigation question from the start of the lesson

- Asks students to self-evaluate their learning from the lesson
