Quadratic Equations: Representations and solutions by completing the square was authored by a group from Italy. The authors are: Ilaria Bencivenni, Francesca Martignone, Domingo Paola, Marta Saccoletto.
The case study examines a lesson from Kanto, Japan and focuses on:
- Algebraic and geometrical representations.
- Quadratic equation solutions by means of completing the square.
- Working group activities.
- The role of the teacher during teaching-learning activities.
The video is made up of four different parts:
- Part 1: Introduction to the work and reminders of the previous lesson. (00:00 - 03:25)
- Part 2: Solving the two equations. (03:25 - 11:52)
- Part 3: Comparison in groups. (11:52 - 15:00)
- Part 4: Analysing two solutions. (15:00 - 17:20)
The full case study is available in the attachments section. The comments on the video have been added by the OECD on behalf of the authors. The blue comments relate to the mathematics, the yellow comments to the teaching moves, and the brown comments are questions to consider. We invite you and your peers to add your own thoughts and comments on the video at different timestamps, or build on the ideas that are already there, in order to help build a global exchange on mathematics teaching.
